The Legal Services Directorate at Avon and Somerset Constabulary is offering an exciting opportunity for a lawyer who has a real interest in pursuing a rewarding career with a difference.

We are seeking a lawyer, through our broad range of legal work, to support the Constabulary’s objective to provide an outstanding service to the public. Our work spans multiple areas including civil litigation, police misconduct and employment matters.

Avon and Somerset is also leading the way in transforming how offences of rape and serious sexual offences (‘RASSO’) are investigated and prosecuted, which forms part of the Constabulary’s strategic priorities concerning offences of violence against women and girls (‘VAWG’) and focussing on perpetrator behaviour.

With support and guidance from the rest of the team, the successful candidate will play a key role in identifying opportunities to implement legal safeguarding measures and disrupt offending behaviour by delivering expert advice on a range of legal protective measures open to the police to protect the public from the risk of harm and criminal activity.

Specific experience of working of police work is not required.  Some advocacy experience is desirable but not essential but the successful candidate should be prepared to seek experience in this area with appropriate training.

We are a friendly and supportive team which will enable you to expand your existing knowledge, skills and experience.

Skills and experience required:

  • Qualified solicitor, Barrister or FILEX with rights of audience in England and Wales
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to make applications in court
  • Ability to act under pressure and respond quickly to changing and conflicting demands

Work Location: 

You will be classed as a 'blended work', for the majority of the time you will be able to work from home, however, you will need to attend court as required within the Avon and Somerset Police area. Please note that your secondary location will be; Police & Fire HQ, Valley Road, Portishead, North Somerset, BS20 8QJ

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

Blended Working/ Hybrid Working

Avon and Somerset Police encourage flexible working where operationally possible.
This role has been identified as a blended role.
The successful candidate for this role will have the opportunity to work from home whilst also at a secondary work location, which will be a police premises. The successful applicant will have the option to discuss working arrangements with their line manager. All applicants must reside within the UK.
