Would you enjoy role playing scenarios such as Anti-Social Disorder and Stop and Search to support learning and development of Uniformed Officers within Avon and Somerset?

If so, then you should apply to become a Role Play Volunteer for Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

This is a brand new role that has been created to support the training of student officers.

The role actor will be required to act as either the suspect, victim or witness in any of the exercises.

Some training topics relate to matters that some people may find upsetting or traumatic. Applicants for this role should consider the scenarios that will be involved in training (domestic abuse, mental health etc) and consider their own well being prior to applying.

A typical day as a volunteer role player:

  • Volunteers will be asked to attend a briefing for the trainers, assessors and role actors.
  • The volunteers will be advised what their role will be for the day and given opportunity to ask questions for clarification
  • The volunteers will be allocated to a scenario and aske to remain in that scenario for the duration of the session, usually for the day, and will interact with students in that role. They must adhere to the brief provided in order to offer a consistent learning experience for all the students.
  • The volunteer will be expected to dynamically react to the scenario whilst being mindful of the learning objectives.
  • The scenarios are observed by training assessors who will provide feedback to the students and mark against specific assessment criteria. They may provide feedback to the volunteers to assist with their development as a role player.

A few of the scenarios involve fake blood. There will be physical contact of the volunteer while the student conducts an assessment for injuries from head to toe, They may need to put the role player into the recovery position, or conduct a physical search of outer clothing.

Some scenarios require the role player to display verbally aggressive behaviour (for the officer to deescalate).

Some of the training sessions are very fluid and although there will be frequent breaks, these may not be planned.

Sessions will vary as required but will always be during the day during the week. The Training sessions generally last from 9am-4pm and the volunteers will need to attend the whole session.
