Are you looking to make a difference in child protection? Are you ready for a challenge?

An exciting role has come up in our Avon and Somerset Constabulary Internet Child Abuse Team. You will be making a difference by identifying those who pose a risk to children online, you are aiding in the safeguarding of children and bringing offenders of serious crimes to justice. Working within the Internet Child Abuse Team, you get to see and be part of the whole process from when the initial referral is received to the trial and sentencing of offenders. Prosecuting perpetrators at an early stage will help manage their behaviour and prevent further offending, preventing further victims.

A typical day is reviewing police systems, reviewing data, sending applications to partner agencies for information, completing research for information about perpetrators and finalising this in a report for the investigating officer. It also involves checking for updates and liaising with colleagues throughout the day.

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • To provide accurate data description and describe criminal intelligence to facilitate analysis and inform decision-making.
  • To proactively identify information sources, collect and collate relevant information, drawing on open and closed sources.
  • To evaluate information to ensure data quality, accuracy, integrity and security of data.
  • To conduct research into relevant issues, problems and targets in order to determine their nature and extent, utilising quantitative and qualitative data.
  • To conduct analysis of data/information, as directed, including drawing inferences.
  • Develop a knowledge resource in relation to issues affecting the district/department, such as identify useful contacts, read and summarise published research, etc.

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • The post holder will hold IPP (Intelligence Professionalisation Programme) accreditation or willing to gain it.
  • Computer Literate.
  • Working knowledge of Excel and databases.
  • Experience of communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience of undertaking research of a qualitative and quantitative nature.
  • Experience of dealing with people both face to face and over the phone.

The Internet Child Abuse Team work with law enforcement partners and industry to identify and investigate those who use the internet to abuse and cause harm to children. The team consists of detectives, police staff investigators and intelligence researchers who work together to safeguard children and bring offenders to justice. Technology is continually evolving and this is a busy team who have child protection at the foremost of their minds. As part of the role, team members could be exposed to child abuse images and may have to read text describing an image or conversation. Psychological support is provided as part of the role.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

Work on a bank or public holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service.
