Our Detainee Transport Service Escort Officer plays a part with supporting the operational policing during the peak demand and working closely with the police response, communications and custody teams.

The role is extremely varied, the opportunity of working within a close team and being in a fast-pace environment.

 

A typical day will be proactively monitoring police radio channels to identify potential arrest. You will then receive handover of the detainee then transport and book them into custody.

During this process you will be responsible for the detainee’s welfare and wellbeing.

 

By transporting detainees from the scene of arrest into custody allows Police Officers to promptly progress investigations, support victims of crime and be available to attend other response calls.

 

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Monitor, supervise and control the movement of detainees in transport; ensuring the security and integrity of the building and vehicle
  • Check and provide for the detained persons welfare needs; placing in and removing from the vehicle, maintaining high standards of security and safety at all times
  • To deal with general enquiries, ensuring that confidential information is not disclosed
  • Restrain any person in custody who has become violent towards them, colleagues or any other person within the custody unit

 

Experience and qualifications required:

  • Experience of communicating orally and in writing with a wide range of people
  • The ability to manage challenging behaviour
  • Experience or an ability to make informed decisions
  • Understanding of confidentiality and relevant legislation
  • Must be computer literate
  • A full driving licence is required for this role

 

Please note, this role involves working shifts that include evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.  Work on a bank holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service.

We are recruiting for the following:

  • 9.99 hours per week, based at Patchway Police Centre. Shift pattern: 2 night shifts (19:00 to 05:00) on Friday and Saturday, 1 day shift (08:00 to 16:00) every few weeks and 12 days off.
  • 19.99 hours per week, based at Bridgwater Police Centre and Yeovil Police Station. Shift pattern: 2 night shifts (19:00 to 05:00) every Friday and Saturday, with 2 day shifts (08:00 to 16:00) every few weeks and 5 days off.

Shift patterns are attached.

You will receive a shift allowance of 20% (base salary + 20%) and an enhanced rate for hours worked on a weekend. Please be aware due to the part time hours, you’ll receive your salary pro rata.

All successful candidates will be required to complete a three week training course, on a full time basis based at Police Headquarters, Portishead. Our next course is due to take place in the Autumn 2020 and if you are successful at the recruitment process you will either be required to attend this course or may be placed on a bank for up to 6 months awaiting appointment. You’ll be given additional training over 2 days in 10 weeks.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
