The South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) are looking for two Workshop Engineer's keen to progress their careers as part of our Technical Surveillance Unit (TSU).

Are you an electrical engineer with excellent computer skills? Are you able to think outside the box to build and adapt equipment to assist in the fight against organised crime?

We have an opportunity for a Workshop Engineer in our Technical Surveillance Unit (TSU). You will research and evaluate current and emerging technology, liaise with manufacturers and service providers and keeping abreast of advancements in technical surveillance equipment whilst providing operational support to the Regional TSU Technicians and Technical Officers.

You will the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills in aspects of technical surveillance equipment and systems supporting a regional team.

SWROCU is a collaboration of police officers and police staff from the five South West regional forces. We’re part of a national network of nine ROCUs covering England and Wales.

We have more than 20 capabilities that staff and officers work in to Pursue offenders, Protect and Prepare individuals and organisations, and Prevent people from engaging in serious and organised crime.

Our capabilities are here to advise, to assist, or to fully adopt investigations.

We work with local forces and national partners to target and disrupt criminals posing the greatest risk of Serious and Organised Criminality (SOC). This includes offenders involved in cyber threats, economic crime, drug conspiracies, modern slavery and human trafficking, and child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Essential skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • HND, HNC, NVQ (or recognised BTEC) qualification in electronic engineering and / or have previous technical experience, including an in-depth knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering and video / audio technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with a range of individuals and groups inside and outside of the force, including external providers of equipment.
  • Understanding how technical equipment can be physically adapted and manipulated.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimum supervision, providing expert advice and recommendations on the design and deployment of equipment to meet operational requirements.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to address and resolve complex technical issues, including researching and designing innovative solutions to meet unusual or unique operational needs and identifying the causes of technical failures or breakdowns.
  • Ability to deal with multiple demands under considerable time pressures which may involve physical demands.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of computer skills and experience of working with a range of bespoke computer packages with the ability to maintain a range of databases and to collate, analyse and interpret a range of complex diagnostic data.
  • Must be prepared to travel and deploy across the South West Region and nationally as required in response to operational demands.

Vetting and safeguarding

This post is subject to a higher security clearance at MV and SC – Management Vetting and Security Clearance Level.

Police Barred and Advisory lists

Individuals placed on the Police Barred and Advisory lists will not be considered for employment by the police for a minimum of five years from the date of listing in the case of gross misconduct, or three years from the date of listing in the case of poor performance.
