The Deputy Armourer position is a unique and interesting role, where you’d have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of different people. If you have an interest in engineering, firearms and shooting then this is a job that will never have a dull moment.

The Armourers are essential to the world of Armed Policing and Operational Firearms Training and are pivotal to keeping Armed Officers on the streets, protecting the public.

The Armoury is often a dynamic working environment, meaning you rarely have a “typical” day. Your tasks and demand will vary to match those of Operational Policing and Firearms Training.

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • To assist the Force Armourer in the security, cleanliness, maintenance and repair of all operational, educational and training weapons associated ammunition, other munitions and ancillary equipment. To include auditing and inspecting the armouries in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Avon and Somerset in compliance with their identified operating procedures.
  • To assist with the receipt of and disposal of weapons and ammunition surrendered to the police in line with Force policy and procedures.
  • To assist in giving instruction, advice and guidance in firearms and related matters within their area of expertise and assist where appropriate with the delivery of firearms training. To facilitate visits and firearms presentations in force and to external groups as directed by the Unit Head.
  • To examine and report on the status of firearms and ammunition and to attend court to give evidence in line with current policy guidelines.
  • To liaise with all external Forensic examination providers and arrange delivery / collection of items as required.
  • To develop and maintain an in depth knowledge of firearms legislation, including providing advice where appropriate.

 

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • Qualified to service Force weapons or willing to achieve this qualification within 6 months.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and orally.
  • Strong organisation skills and have experience of maintaining accurate records.
  • Strong working knowledge of handling firearms, ammunition, explosives and pyrotechnics as well as being familiar with the working components of weapons and their maintenance.

 

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
