We live in a data driven society and policing is ever evolving to adapt and respond to the digital environment to ensure it can relentlessly pursue criminals, protect the vulnerable, and reduce crime, wherever that occurs.

Policing holds vast amounts of data for law enforcement and operational purposes, but how that data is used requires rigorous governance to ensure its retention and use is lawful, fair and proportionate and does not infringe on the rights and freedoms of individuals, such as the wider public.

In order to meet the organisation’s strategic ambitions for data a new opportunity has arisen within our in-house Information Governance (IG) team for an Information Governance Officer to support the team in delivering an efficient and effective Information Governance function.

The role:

You will provide a key support role for the managers being involved in the initial triage and assessment of work coming into the team including Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA’s), information sharing agreements, as well as the investigation of data breaches and information security matters. You will work within a high performing team of Data protection specialists reporting to the Information Governance Manager.  You will need to be flexible, proactive and adaptable to the changing needs of the IG team to support the Constabulary on its journey to becoming an outstanding police force.

Information Governance (IG) is a team of compliance specialists who support the Constabulary in meeting its strategic objectives whilst ensuring it complies with relevant legislation e.g UK GDPR and the DPA 2018.  Support provided covers a wide range of governance matters such as information sharing, information security, audit and regulatory compliance as well as providing expert advice on new data related initiatives.

  • Undertake the investigation of data breaches with confidence and speed
  • Support the IG Manager in the assessment and drafting of Information Sharing Agreements and Data Processing Contracts for data protection compliance purposes
  • Support managers in devising and delivering training to employees
  • You will be required to keep up to date with changes in legislation and guidance

You must have the experience, skills and ability to:

  • Interpret and apply legislation i.e. The Freedom of Information Act 2000, The Data Protection Act 2018, the UK GDPR, the Human Rights Act 1998, MPOI APP 2013 Protocol and other relevant legislation
  • Prioritise and work to tight deadlines
  • Make effective decisions and present information in a logical manner
  • Good IT skills and experience of Microsoft Office and redaction software
  • Work as part of a team
