We are looking for talented individuals who will relish the huge sense of purpose that comes with helping us to achieve our vision of becoming an outstanding police service for everyone. As part of a newly created dedicated Data Science capability, you will be responsible for providing professional and creative strategic solutions for the delivery of innovative and ethical Data Science techniques to help and advise operational decision makers, by providing enhanced insight to our data.

As a Data Scientist you will develop, test, implement and maintain analytical models as well as developing and interpreting statistical models to allow proactive use of our data to inform the business and interpret new insights from predictive statistical models, develop strategic recommendations and communicate implications to the business

As a team you will work to deliver advanced analytics and modelling, and work with the wider Performance and Insight team in data discovery and analytical efforts to innovatively use data to discover signals, patterns and relationships that will guide strategic and operational decisions for the business.

We want to create a team with a diverse range of skills, experience and knowledge, either with a background in the public sector, or who may have never worked in our sector before but technical experience will be critical to this role. This role will be based at our headquarters in Portishead with an expectation that you are able to travel around the constabulary, however we provide the ability to work remotely and flexibly, and in light of the current COVID-19 situation most staff are currently home working.

 

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • To devise solutions to business problems that take advantage of data driven analytical techniques utilising and informing the Data Strategy.
  • To deliver advanced analytics work with analytical modelling, applying appropriate techniques in order to inform decision making and tasking of resources.
  • To interpret new insights from predictive statistical models, develop strategic recommendations and communicate implications to the business to influence board/committees.
  • To work with other data specialists to integrate data from multiple internal and external sources to be used for analytics models, and to build models and model assessments to provide enhanced data coverage across agency boundaries.
  • To gather, analyse, and model data and key performance indicators to develop quantitative and qualitative business insights via statistical models to be used within and outside of the department to inform the business.
  • To communicate Analytics models and results to non-technical audiences, in both verbal and written formats in line with our vision to have a data literate workforce.

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • You have experience of delivering advanced analytics
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills - including verbal and written communication, presentation skills and the ability to lead and facilitate meetings and workshops with a range of stakeholders;
  • You are knowledgeable in visualisation of analytical outputs
  • You use traditional statistical methodologies as well as newer techniques from computational statistics and data mining
  • You are experienced in problem solving complex issues
  • You are familiar with the application of predictive analytics and forecasting to real world problems
  • You are able to work independently, handle multiple tasks, and prioritised based on the requirements of the business.
  • You are qualified to degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent relevant experience
