The Legal and Compliance Services Directorate (L&CSD) at Avon and Somerset Constabulary deals with a diverse range of legal matters on behalf of the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Commissioner. The work is fast paced, challenging and covers both contentious and advisory work in areas such as employment, civil claims, misconduct, judicial review, inquests as well as operational work including applications for civil preventative orders.

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Civil Litigation Lawyer who will manage and supervise the Civil team, under the supervision of the Head of Legal Services as well handling their own caseload of complex civil claims, inquests, judicial reviews or general advice.

The team deal with claims against the Chief Constable in areas such as unlawful arrest/false imprisonment, human rights, negligence, Employer Liability/Public Liability personal injury claims and litigated road traffic collisions claims. The team also deal with judicial reviews, inquests and the provision of general legal advice across the constabulary. 

This is a varied, unique and diverse area of practice which provides real opportunities to interpret and challenge the law which has national significance and the setting of precedents. There are opportunities to attend court and undertake advocacy as well as attending cases in the higher courts, including the Court of Appeal or other appeal tribunals.

In addition to technical excellence candidates must be able to demonstrate strong leadership skills and be able to provide direction to a team of lawyers and paralegals whilst possessing excellent interpersonal, influencing and negotiation skills.

Candidates should have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of police law or display an aptitude to learn this and have the requisite transferable skills.
