Are you driven by curiosity?  Would you like to work in a role where you are able to help the people in your community at their time of need?

At Avon and Somerset Police our vision is to deliver outstanding policing for everyone within our communities.  Our Investigative teams provide a vital role in this vision and to support this we have a number of exciting opportunities.

As a member of our investigative support team you will be directly involved in the process of collecting evidence from and on behalf of victims of crime and witnesses. After training and local mentoring, your role will see you providing critical support to our policing teams by taking statements from victims and witnesses focusing on their needs and on delivering the best possible outcome for them and the wider public. You will also be involved in investigations and will research possible sources of evidence, such as CCTV footage and further witnesses, so that the most accurate and factual information is available for decision making.

You will work as part of The Detainee Investigation Team (DIT) and support investigations when arrested persons reach the forces custody units. All of the DIT are based at custody centres so that we can work closely with both the response and custody teams to effectively investigate the circumstances that led to someone’s arrest.

We will support you in your development and, as you grow in your professional practice, you will be able to:

  • Support and guide victims and witnesses through the investigative process and perform interviews to take statements
  • Collect and record information that will help reduce crime
  • Compile written reports based on the evidence you have collected
  • Use databases to keep an accurate and up to date record of the evidence collected
  • Work closely with external agencies and other internal departments to ensure that we deliver the most effective service
  • Assist and co-ordinate the collection, handling and preserving of evidence
  • Attend court and present the evidence that you have collected.

Skills and experience required

  • Computer literate and have a working knowledge of programmes such as Word and Excel
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your own workload and to use initiative.
  • Ability to write concise and accurate reports.

Additional Information

We are looking for individuals who can work flexibly across a 7-day shift pattern. This could include a range of early, day and late shifts with applicable shift and weekends enhancements.  You should ideally hold a full current driving licence or be able to travel around the force area using alternative transport.

You will undertake a 7-day Information Communication Technology (ICT) training starting on Tuesday 14th March 2023, your first day of training you will report to Police Headquarters, Valley Road, Portishead, Bristol, BS20 8QJ and the remaining duration of the training will be held at Patchway Police Centre, Gloucester Road, BS34 6PY.  Once you have completed the ICT training you will attend a 5-day Investigation Support Officers (ISO) training course starting on 27th March 2023 based at Police Headquarters, Portishead, BS20 8QJ.

The top scoring applicant at interview stage will be offered the post. The remaining applicants who still pass the interview benchmark will have the opportunity to be placed on a bank for up to 12 months awaiting appointment, this will be pending further vacancies arising for the same role in your preferred location. By giving your consent this does not prevent you from applying for any other opportunities.
