Exciting new opportunities have arisen to join Counter Terrorism Policing South West Dedicated Surveillance Team; providing support to the region and national network in the investigation of terrorism.

You will form part of a team of police officers and staff performing covert duties on a daily basis. Wherever possible we attempt to minimise disruption in working hours and your duties are set on a weekly basis, however there is a requirement for flexibility in response to operation demand.

Applications are invited from PC’s who either hold a current Q1 surveillance license or have aspirations to become surveillance officers. If you are not currently surveillance trained in order to be successful in securing this post you will need to complete or already have completed a number of processes as set out below.

  • National surveillance pre-select
  • Police response driving course
  • Police advanced driving course
  • Q1 surveillance course – residential 5 week course

If you are successful at paper application process CTPSW will arrange for you to attend a surveillance pre-select course (dates to be confirmed). If you are not already trained to the required driving standards we will make arrangements for these assessments too. If you are successful at these assessments you will then move to the next stage of interview.

If you are successful at interview, there will be a mandatory requirement to complete these necessary driving and surveillance courses and successfully complete a probation period before securing your full position within CTPSW. There will opportunities for field training prior to attendance. If you are unsuccessful you will be required to return to your respective force.

This post is a blended working post, therefore there is some flexibility in relation to the location depending on the successful candidate however this will require discussion with CTPSW managers prior to postings.

This process is open to PC’s subject to you passing your initial probation period prior to application. Your application will also be subject to sanction of your Head of Department.

Please be aware that any costs associated with home to work travel must be carried out at your own expense and in your own time, however due to the covert nature or our role there will be some flexibility as part of current working arrangements.

You must be a British citizen to work for the department. If you hold dual nationality, one component of which is British, you may also be considered. However, if successful, you may be asked to relinquish your nonBritish nationality (and any entitlement you may have to a foreign nationality) as a condition of your confirmation of appointment with the department.  One of your parents should also be British or have substantial ties to the UK. In the latter instance; substantial ties means that your parent is a citizen of a British Overseas Territory, a Commonwealth citizen, US citizen, EEA citizen, British national or citizen overseas, and they would need to have demonstrable connections with the UK by way of family history or have been resident here for a substantial period of time.

If you're already married to, or cohabiting with, a person who isn't a British citizen, you may still be eligible for employment at the discretion of the department. You should note however, that marriage to, or cohabitation with, a person who isn't a British citizen after appointment may, in some circumstances, result in the withdrawal of security clearance and subsequent transfer to another department, or (if this is not possible or the officer does not wish to transfer) dismissal. Each case will be considered on its merits, taking into account the ties between the person involved and the United Kingdom

Appointments to this posts are subject to security clearance to Police Management and National Security vetting – Security Clearance Level (SC).

Working pattern – Flexible working, full time, part time and job share applications will be considered. Please specify if you are seeking an arrangement other than full time and how you anticipate this may be managed in the role you are applying for.

The successful candidates will be expected to remain in post for a minimum of two years unless operational requirements dictate otherwise.

Applications should be submitted against the Competency and Values Framework (CVF) questions attached.

Shortlisting panels will only consider one piece of evidence per competency and decide whether this shows potential to undertake the role under consideration.

For more information about the role or any additional questions about the processes, please contact: DI Rob Back, A/DI Tom Baker or PS Oliver Sargent. Please email them your details in order for them to contact you. tom.baker @avonandsomerset.police.uk Robert.back@avonandsomerset.police.uk Oliver.sargent@avonandsomerset.police.uk

Please be advised that a decision has been made by the Chief Officer Group that at this time no applications from any DC regardless of Directorate or PC within the Investigations Directorate will be considered for this role. Please be assured this is under regular review and should you believe exceptional consideration should be given to your eligibility to apply then please ensure you have discussed this with your DCI before completing an application.

Furthermore, officers who are under any current tenure or time commitment within their own department will unfortunately not be eligible to apply.  Specifically, response officers must have completed 18 months in post once they have completed their Taser/Response course and PCDA officers are not eligible to apply for any role during their 3 year course.  PCDA Graduate Officers are not eligible to apply for other roles until the 10th month of their 4th year posting.  The Mounted Section and Underwater Dive Team also carry 2 year tenures in post before applying for other roles.
