The Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) have an exciting opportunity to join them as an HOLMES indexing supervisor.

MCIT is a dynamic three-force collaborative unit investigating the most serious of crimes and is based in Bristol. The Home Office Large Major Enquiry System (HOLMES) is a computer database that has been designed to aid the investigation into large-scale enquiries. It can be used to collate and subsequently cross reference all information gathered in a major investigation.

Reporting to the Major Incident Room Manager you will work on numerous complex major crime investigations across three forces and will supervise and support a team of HOLMES indexers. You will oversee and monitor the quality of indexing to ensure all items received into a major incident room are recorded accurately and efficiently to assist the investigation.  The majority of the work covered by the Major Crime Investigation Team is that of Homicide investigations. The Index Supervisors play a vital role in the smooth running of these investigations. They are an integral part of the team trying to bring serious offenders to justice. This can be a fast paced, really interesting work, making a real difference to communities.

In this role, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing and maintaining a system of prioritising documents to be dealt with by the HOLMES2 Indexers/Researchers, in liaison with the MIR Manager.
  • Ensuring that Indexing is carried out in accordance with Best Practice, giving advice in relation to day-to-day indexing issues.
  • You will ensure the quality of Indexing by concentrating on the registration of documents, undertaking quality and accuracy checks of the information indexed and monitoring the Indexing process.
  • Distributing and allocating work to the Indexers/Researchers on a daily basis, in line with the priority of each document.
  • You will carry out the role of a HOLMES2 Indexer/Researcher, by Indexing, recording and researching all relevant information on HOLMES2 and other intelligence/force databases, ensuring that records are accurate and easily retrievable and raising actions for investigation by enquiry officers.

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • The post holder must be computer literate and have successfully completed the HOLMES2 indexer course or be willing to undertake the training upon appointment.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role and dealing with information of a sensitive nature is essential.
  • It would be advantageous to have previous experience of undertaking research.
  • You should ideally hold a full current driving licence or be able to travel around the region using alternative transport.

Additional Information:

Although the role profile requires the post holder to have successfully completed the Holmes2 indexer course this is not essential, consideration will be given to those that have not completed this course, however the successful candidate will be required to complete this training on appointment.

Blended Working/ Hybrid Working

The successful candidate for this role will have the opportunity to work from home whilst also at a secondary work location, which will be a police premises.
