Are you looking for a role where you will be at the forefront of investigating organised crime? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Intelligence Assistant to join the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) with the option to be based in Bristol or Exeter. As an Intelligence Assistant in this team you will be the first point of contact for access to Regional Police Resources ensuring intelligence and risk is prioritised and actioned.

The role of Intelligence Assistant is a varied and busy one and offers the opportunity to develop your research skills as well as to help inform and influence decision making at all levels of policing. Working on the team will give you an insight into the Regional Organised Crime Unit and the varied threats and risk involving Serious and Organised Crime and how they make a real difference to the community.

Your typical day involves conducting research, collation and dissemination of relevant intelligence information in support of the National Intelligence Model processes on behalf of the Gateway Team in the South West ROCU. You will provide an initial point of contact service either by telephone or in person for internal service users of intelligence and partners. Your role will involve liaising and working closely with internal departments, other forces and partner agencies to ensure a timely exchange of relevant information.


In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • To provide an initial point of contact service either by telephone or in person for internal service users of intelligence and partners, ensuring information sharing is in accordance with legislation and policy
  • To liaise and work closely with internal departments, other forces and partner agencies to ensure a timely exchange of relevant information
  • To ensure relevant information is input, processed or updated onto the force computer systems in and efficient and timely manner
  • Having evaluated incoming information to make reasoned decisions regarding the initial internal and external dissemination in the most appropriate format ensuring accurate records are kept and updated
  • To undertake research across all force/national databases and other information and intelligence sources as directed by supervisors, reporting findings either verbally or in writing
  • To attend and contributes at appropriate force and partner agency meetings ensuring disclosure is in accordance with legislation and policy

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • You will need excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to adapt your style as necessary.
  • You will require experience of decision making with the ability to problem solve, along with previous experience of conducting investigations and research skills.
  • You must have an accurate and methodical approach to work, especially in relation to attention to detail.
  • You must be able to work as part of a team.
  • You will hold IPP (Intelligence Professionalisation Programme) accreditation or willing to gain it.
  • An awareness of the National Intelligence Model (NIM) is desirable.

Please note appointments to this post are subject to a higher security clearance at SC & MV Level.  To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

Work on a bank or public holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service.

Individuals placed on the Police Barred and Advisory lists will not be considered for employment by the police for a minimum of 5 years from the date of listing in the case of gross misconduct, or 3 years from the date of listing in the case of poor performance.
