Are you an experienced IT systems professional who recognises that quality IT provision requires both an eye for technical detail and an understanding of the strategic view of complex business systems?

Avon and Somerset Constabulary relies on technology to provide information to deliver policing to our local communities. The Information Technology Directorate comprises IT professionals who are dedicated to IT provision that directly supports policing.

The Applications delivery area comprises people-focussed, technical specialists whose passion is maintaining robust, highly available business systems which allow policing information to be available when and where required.

We have a role available for a Senior Technical Support Officer within our Applications team providing technical support for a variety of critical business systems including NicheRMS (the core records management system which covers Intel, Investigation, Crime Management, Custody and Case Preparation records).

You will have a strong understanding of best practice throughout all stages of the systems lifecycle - design, implementation and through-life support. An ability to adapt strong computer literacy to a variety of systems and situations is critical so that you can provide professional and technical expertise to stakeholders within and without the IT Directorate.

In this role your Main Responsibilities will be:- 

  • Working with other technical staff in designated and virtual teams
  • Providing comprehensive technical knowledge to a range of technical support and development services. This will include, but is not limited to, the following:-
    • Provision, development and solutioning
    • Installation and configuration
    • Input to development of standards
    • Service monitoring, asset management, pro-active prevention and associated maintenance
    • Fault diagnosis and resolution
    • Upgrades and Patching
    • Undertaking of various technical activities
  • Ensuring that the application/service operates to professional standards of quality and performance in terms of stability, availability and security, along with liaison with third-party suppliers and the provision of technical advice and guidance
  • To understand and comply with all standard procedures and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) processes
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of existing processes and practices within own area of work in order to identify and implement opportunities for change and innovation and enable continuous improvement
  • Helping to create new knowledge base articles to share information for re-use throughout the team and IT Directorate and providing procedural documentation and relevant reports
  • To monitor, maintain and enhance working knowledge of emerging technology and industry best practice, gaining knowledge and expertise through hands-on experience, self-study, and other agreed learning environments
  • Making recommendations for service improvement, utilising industry standards to provide risk mitigation
  • Delivering tasks within technical projects, advising and recommendations in the development and implementation of solutions. Using a combination of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills, including consultation skills
  • Informing and delivering the strategy of the IT Directorate contributing to the overall strategy and vision of the organisation

 Skills, Experience and Qualifications required:

  • Experience of working in a mature IT organisation
  • Strong computer literacy and understanding of technologies to a level deeper than simply the end-user experience
  • Experience in relevant technologies (including Windows Servers, end-user devices, Windows system administrative tools and complex line-of-business applications)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Customer service skills and a pro-active approach to problem solving
  • Good time management skills to enable completion of tasks within tight timescales
  • Methodical approach to the organisation of workloads
  • Open to new ways of working
  • Collaboration and communication across multiple people (colleagues, partners, suppliers) and teams
  • Engages with stakeholders to conduct joint working, developing and maintaining relationships to enhance effectiveness
  • Ability to develop good relationships and co-operation within the team and with other colleagues across the directorate and organisation
  • Works effectively as a team member and actively supports and assists colleagues to reach individual, team, directorate and organisations objectives
