We have an exciting opportunity for two accredited Surveillance Officers to join our Force Surveillance team on a temporary basis lasting approximately 12 months.

Serious and Organised Crime causes harm to the communities of Avon & Somerset through drug dealing, use of weapons and organised criminality that exploits the vulnerable; this role provides an opportunity to proactively target offenders involved In these types of criminality as well as other opportunities to provide specialist support to investigations within Avon & Somerset.

You will form part of the Constabulary’s Force Surveillance Team providing support for Level II operations. By surveillance and proactive intelligence gathering, you will provide evidence and intelligence leading to the arrest and conviction of subjects.

In this role your Main Responsibilities will be:-

  • To undertake, engage and be accountable for key decision making in relation to your deployment as a Surveillance Officer whilst static, on foot or in a vehicle.
  • Performing dynamic risk assessments as the surveillance officer, whilst balancing the overarching aims of the deployment taking into consideration personal and public safety.
  • Conducting foot and mobile surveillance as part of a surveillance team across the region whilst obtaining evidence and intelligence in respect of allocated operations, ensuring these are obtained in accordance with relevant policy and legal requirements.
  • To obtain and execute search warrants under Section 8 and/or search premises as designated by Section 18 (1) and 18 (2) and seize evidence under the provisions of section 19 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
  • Developing proactive strategies and tactics to gather evidence or intelligence to prove or disprove involvement of allocated nominal which will lead to the arrest, conviction and or disruption of those subject to investigation.
  • Forming effective working relationships with Intelligence and Investigation officers to develop intelligence and research in order to reduce criminal activity.
  • Operating photographic and other technical equipment ensuring that all procedures are followed to ensure evidential integrity.
  • Assisting in the preparation and presentation of prosecution case files and relevant documentation giving consideration to evidential and disclosure issues, including attending court and giving evidence.
  • To execute the powers designated by the Chief Constable (under Schedule 38 of the Police Reform Act 2002 as amended by the Policing and Crime Act 2017.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience required:-

  • Hold a Police Advanced Drivers Qualification
  • Hold an accredited Q1 National Surveillance Qualification
  • Experience of obtaining evidence and intelligence
  • Experience of using photographic and technical equipment
  • Experience of developing effective working relationships to work together for a common outcome
