We are looking for driven individuals to join our fast paced and dynamic Emergency Communications Centre, based at Headquarters, Portishead.

Please refer to the job descriptions of Call Handler/Dispatcher for further information about the roles, at this stage.

Once you have passed the shortlisting stage you will be invited to attend a virtual assessment centre where your skills will be assessed against the requirements of the roles.

If you are successful following assessment, interview and recruitment checks, you will be allocated a place on the next available training course. The courses are 4 weeks for Call Handlers and 5 weeks for Dispatchers, Monday – Friday 08:00-16:00 based at the Police Headquarters, Portishead. Until this time, you will be placed on a bank.

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Act as the first point of contact to members of the public, internal staff and external agencies.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls to the Constabulary, making accurate initial assessments, based on risk and vulnerability, determining the most appropriate response.
  • Direct and task the deployment of all appropriate and available operational resources, prioritising workload in line with Force Values.
  • Take a pro-active role in supporting the development of a One Team approach for First Point of Contact to support the organisation in the delivery of excellent customer service

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • You must be computer literate including knowledge of Windows based packages, have a typing speed of 35 WPM and confident working    across multiple systems at a time.
  • Calm and considered decision making whilst working under pressure.
  • Ability to multi-task, managing competing priorities.

Please note, once appointed you cannot make any internal recruitment application to move from the post of Call Handler/Dispatcher within two years of the date of your appointment.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.


Work on a bank or public holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service.
