“It is the best role I have had in 20 years of policing mostly due to the rewarding nature of the work. It is an opportunity to save young victims from the worst harm and significantly improve their life”

“As a Force we place a significant weight on staff wellbeing and welfare and have long standing and well embedded process and support services to assist colleagues whether that is preventative or reactive”

“There is a real ‘joint team effort’ feeling. We are all passionate and interested in our work and celebrate each other’s achievements”

“The force is a fantastic place to work. I felt welcome and supported from the day I arrived and continue to do so. The force is leading the way nationally in many aspects of Policing which I am now part of. I would have no hesitation in recommending officers from the wider Police family to choose Avon and Somerset.”

“The force is leading the way nationally in respect of RaSSO investigations. This is a great opportunity to be part of national positive change in Policing which is not only rewarding but also brings many opportunities for development.”

“The diversity of communities and geography, having the cities of Bristol and Bath as well as very rural patches was appealing to me. The mixture of the ‘buzz” of city policing mixed with the unique challenges of rural policing was appealing”

Quotes from current A&S officers

Here at Avon and Somerset Police we help people when they need us the most, our colleagues are motivated to ensure that support is given even in the most difficult times.

We are looking for passionate and capable people to join our specialist teams dedicated to the protection of children and young people.

We have a range of Detective Constable opportunities across our TOPAZ, RUBY and ICAT teams.  More information on these teams can be found on the attached ‘Team context’ document.

Topaz is an intelligence driven perpetrator disruption team.  Officers work with TOEX, SW ROCU, GAIN, NCA and local partners to disrupt those that exploit children (criminally and sexually), exhausting every option (power) available.  In the Ruby team we use specially trained detectives to investigate the most complex cases of child abuse in a multi-agency approach. In ICAT we investigate online child abuse, targeting perpetrators that believe they can offend over the internet without consequence.

On each of these teams our investigators work to safeguard children, some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, placing the voice of the child at the heart of our investigations.

These roles are not for everyone, you will be dealing with sensitive and challenging situations and as such you need to be someone who can show professionalism and resilience.

You will need to have the drive and determination to make a difference, we are looking for people with natural tenacity. In a role like this a curious nature is key, we want people who are not afraid to ask those key questions to gather all the evidence.

What you achieve in this role will change people’s lives, we know successful investigations are linked directly with prevention of future harm.

Specialist Child Abuse Investigator accreditation is preferred (SCAIDP) but for the right candidate full training will be provided.

The specialist skills we give you will allow you to hear the child’s voice, pursue offenders and investigate fully to present a clear and comprehensive case that ensures we bring offenders to justice.
