Working at Avon and Somerset Police means joining a progressive and caring organisation with the reputation of being a pioneering and innovative police force. We have the exciting opportunity available to join our award winning Emergency Control Room who are at the heart of our organisation.

The Emergency Communications Operator encompasses both the roles of a Call Handler and Dispatcher based in our Communication Centre at police headquarters, Portishead. These roles are fast paced where no two days are the same, both challenging and rewarding, allowing you to make a real difference to the lives of those that you have supported.

As a Call Handler you will be the first point of contact to the people of Avon and Somerset during times of crisis taking 999 emergency and non-emergency calls providing immediate support, reassurance and advice.

A Dispatcher will work closely with our 999 and 101 Call Handlers to assess the calls received and then advise, direct and deploy police resources. You will make the decision on how to respond and guide police teams attending the incident. Part of your role will also include taking 999 calls.

You will need to be prepared to work shifts in both roles, of which will include a proportion of weekends, nights and bank holidays (for example: 0700-1700, 1300-2300 & 2300-0700).

In addition to the salary stated, you will also receive a generous shift allowance.

What it takes

Our employees come from a variety of backgrounds with a range of professional and life experiences but are united in their wish to provide an outstanding police service to the people in our communities.

This is a great opportunity for you to build on the transferable skills you already have, your experience shapes who you are and we’re offering you the unique opportunity to bring your own perspectives and apply them to your role every day.

You’ll need to be an excellent communicator, the kind of person who can empathise and a natural problem solver. You are likely to have previous experience within a customer service environment.

Driving Licence is not essential for this vacancy. Primarily you will be based at the Police Headquarters in Portishead and must be able to travel to other locations when required.
