Operation Bluestone: PC and DC transferee vacancies plus PC-DC development pathway opportunities

Here at Avon and Somerset Police, we are revolutionising the way rape and serious sexual offences (RaSSO) are investigated and are now recruiting for enthused and passionate officers who have an aspiration to join our existing team and in time become a part of our UK leading Operation Bluestone.

Our dedicated team of specialist investigators work collaboratively to decrease vulnerability led crime in relation to rape and sexual violence. Moving to a more robust approach to RASSO investigations, our aim is to not only increase the numbers of perpetrators brought to justice, but to significantly improve the experience, support and outcomes for victims, at a time when they are at their most vulnerable and in need of our help.

These roles are not for everyone. You will be dealing with sensitive and unpleasant situations and as such you’ll need to demonstrate professionalism and resilience at all times. You will need the drive and determination to make a difference, with the confidence and natural tenacity to ask those key questions required to gather all possible evidence. What you achieve in this role will change people’s lives, with investigation successes linking directly with future prevention of similar repeat occurrences.

Initially, successful applicants may be posted into Core Investigations with a view to moving across to the dedicated Bluestone Team in the near future. 

We are keen to attract DC’s who have experience of working in rape and serious sexual assault investigations and are either already accredited in the Specialist Sexual Assault Investigator Development Programme (SSAIDP), or be willing to undertake the accreditation with our support. (Applicants should have completed the ICIDP accreditation.)

We are also eager to receive applications from PC’s who specifically have an interest, passion and aptitude for investigative work and this type of offence. You may have already taken or be due to sit your National Investigators Exam (NIE), have embarked on the detective accreditation pathway, or alternatively be starting to consider developing your career to become a detective in the future.

We offer multiple pathways together with structured learning and development support tailored to individual needs including 121 mentoring, specialist course provision, plus dedicated time for NIE study and support packages, to name a few. With our support, the specialist and dedicated skills developed will enable you to make a real difference to so many.

Important information regarding transfers to Avon & Somerset.

In line with the National embargo which has been agreed by the Chief Constables of all Constabularies we are unable to accept the transfer of any police officer into Avon & Somerset between 31st December 2022 & 31st March 2023.

Considering the time in which it takes to action a transfer and the validity of pre-appointment checks upon commencement with us we will unfortunately not able to fully progress any applications we receive after 11th July 2022 and will follow the below timeline.

11th July 2022 – 25th September 2022 - Any applications received during this time will be reviewed and shortlisted within 2 weeks of submission.  If successful, you will be invited to an interview.  If unsuccessful you will be notified after shortlisting.

W/C 26th September 2022 - Interviews to take place.

W/C 3rd October 2022  Vetting will commence for successful applicants.

17th October 2022 onwards - Pre-appointment checks will commence.  Held at HQ in Portishead – Biometrics, substance misuse, Medical & Fitness.

17th April 2022 - Proposed course start date
